An environmentally conscious hotel conversion in the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities

Client:
Barnes Construction

Location:
Covent Garden, London

Sector:
Hospitality & Hotels

This project involved converting an 11-storey office building into a 249 bedroom hotel, thus extending the existing hotel to over 640 bedrooms in the centre of London’s theatre land.

Conversion of the existing office block required precise setting out to ensure alignment through all 11 floors.

The ground floor included a new reception and a bar/cafe extension to cater for the additional guests. Lightweight and light reflecting materials were used for the outer skin to maximise the amount of reflected daylight to the retained courtyard bedrooms, whilst also providing visual contrast to the heavy mass of the existing concrete building.

Within the bedrooms, solutions such as pre-fabricated bathroom pods were implemented for construction speed and quality, enabling the hotel to be completed on a fast track program.

The conversion boasts sound environmental credentials achieving a “Very Good” BREEAM rating. As the existing site did not have any outside green space, we designed a new brown roof complete with bird boxes to provide a habitat for local wildlife and encourage biodiversity in the city centre.
