The Bakehouse is a public house in the centre of Welwyn Garden City close to both retail and residential areas. Sitting on a site of approximately 600 sqm, and with 62 car parking spaces, it was completed in 2018 and – as with all Marston’s Inns – aims to cater to families, business people and passing travellers looking for good value refreshments in casual, warm surroundings.
Throughout our design process, considered thought was given to the design, scale and overall site layout in relation to the surrounding environment. The architecture style of The Bakehouse derives from the historic precedents of Welwyn Garden City with its Neo-Georgian architecture. Design features such as the hipped roof, deep eaves, symmetrical lines, red brickwork and brick chimneys are all characteristics of this era.
The attractive outdoor space incorporates high quality landscaping, an outdoor patio, terrace and pergola as well as a children’s play area.
As with all our projects, we specified sustainable materials and construction techniques. The timber frame construction was supplied by local merchants using timber sourced from FSC and/or PEFC (Pan European Forest Certification) forests. The building incorporates low emissivity glass and high levels of environmentally-friendly insulation to maximise heat efficiency, whilst solar powered outdoor lighting and motion-sensor activated back-of-house lighting contributes to reduced day-to-day energy use.
